5.0
Banned Book Club is not your typical YA graphic novel. Based on true stories and experiences of people in South Korea in the 1980s, this book tells the story of Kim Hyun Sook going to college in 1983. Her parents are reluctant, but she is over the moon to expand her horizons.
Kim Hyun looks to many different campus organizations for a group of friends. She finds herself in a banned book club, with very real life and death circumstances.
Let me say this book is serious while also very enjoyable, and there is some depiction of torture. This isn't a pick me up graphic novel. It is incredibly timely if you live in the US where book bans and book challenges are happening at an alarming rate. If you can handle the content of a heavier read, this is a must for your TBR regardless of age.
