Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri - her debut, received a Pulitzer Prize in 2000, and I can easily see why. It is an amazing collection of stories that are so nicely crafted. In them, Lahiri tells stories from the lives of Bengalis in India and in the US. What I like about her portrayal of Indian Americans is the way she describes them - showing their struggles, but not limiting them to a tag of an immigrant. Living in a new country is not always about pain and racism, after all. The collection is very versatile: the stories are written from various perspectives, voices, and points of view. There is an unusual one written from the third plural POV, “we,” which I haven’t come across before.
All these stories are written with thoughtfulness, sympathy, and lyricism. I highly recommend it.
