Never Leave, Never Lie by Thea Verdone

5.0

This book is beautiful. There’s no better descriptor. The writing, the imagery, the characters… pure beauty. At first, I didn’t know how I felt about Alek and the story in general. It didn’t take long for me to be invested and to understand where Alek was coming from. This is, simply, Alek and Ian’s love story as they fight for each other however they know how. And it’s wonderful.

The depiction of depression is amazing. It’s so relatable and it makes the characters so real. The feeling of drowning in helplessness and apathy, as well as the feeling of trying and trying to help, but not being able to reach that other person, is so real it could’ve come out straight out of my life.

This book is wonderful. It’s beautiful, it’s well written, it’s a roller coaster of emotions. I broke my one rule for it. I never give five stars to a book I won’t read again. As much as I loved this book, my heart can’t handle it again (at least any time soon), but I can’t imagine giving this masterpiece less than five stars.

Oh and not to mention the imagery of the fox? I could cry thinking about it. And the wisteria? I felt like I had synesthesia just by reading this book and trust me, I am the last person to have that.

This book was so much more than a typical romance book, I almost hate to give it a spice level. It feels wrong. However the few spicy parts were *spicy*, I think primarily because it was so well written I knew these characters so well. So for that, 3/5 spice levels.

*already editing this three minutes after posting because I didn’t even mention the Victorian. Not that words can do it justice, but having that old, half run down, gothic mansion as the backdrop for this love story was absolute perfection. I don’t even have more to say. It was just perfect.

*This was an ARC I was gifted by the author. The opinion is all mine and was in no way influenced.
