The Nightmare Man by J.H. Markert

3.0

The Nightmare Man is a dark and violent horror novel, steeped in crime with an illusion of the paranormal. It is a tremendous atmospheric novel for readers looking to pick up something with some spook factor. While the foundation can seem quite a cliche - a troubled writer, murders based on a book, and a primary investigator with substance abuse issues - it weaves itself into something quite different. Markert has implemented plot points that will intrigue the reader and keep them guessing where the next turn will lead them.

At times it may seem like you have read this story before, but it will take you on a journey different to what you may anticipate. Coupled with strong character design and strong, authentic relationships, this is a great book.

trigger warnings: murder, animal cruelty, blood depiction, alcohol and drug consumption, self-harm (specifically cutting), sexual assault, missing person (specifically children)
