I am not sure what kind of prose this is (purple? flowery?) but I know that it isn't for me.  Respect to those who like this style of writing, but I found that the descriptions took me out of the story more than they kept me in it.  An example:

"Faiz stared at me like I'd told him the secret names of the prophets, the private and the profane, the sacred alphabet shared by devotee and deity.  He looked at me like I'd taken up the memory of his first word and given him a corpse instead."

I don't understand it.  I don't know what this feeling is that is trying to be portrayed.  I don't know how this describes a look that someone gives someone else.

I just don't get it.  But, it may be a *me* thing and not a book thing (though the average rating tells me I might not be far off the mark).
