Peter Darling by Austin Chant

4.0

What an absolutely extraordinary read! It’s been a while since I finished a book in a day. There were so many things to love about this book—the characters, the drama, the adventure, the compelling action, the representation, etc. However, there were things that held me back from giving it a 5/5 stars sadly.

I really wish this story had been longer and more detailed. There were some things that were cut to the point which isn’t bad but if they had been fleshed our more, the story would have filled in some of the holes and questions that were left. I’m not sure if the author had a limit on the page count, but it would have helped immensely if he hadn’t restrained himself or held back.

I loved the characters but I had mixed feelings about Ernest. I didn’t think he was fleshed out enough and didn’t understand his need and overall importance in the book. He almost seemed more like a plot device unfortunately. I expected him to be a hero, a villain, another boy that falls head over heels for Peter...but he was nothing. It was really disappointing.

As for Hook and Peter’s romance...I think it should have started being built up a bit earlier. It seemed a bit rushed.

Also, I wanted more to come out of Peter Pan’s backstory. It seemed to be very...just there. I expected him to do something about his home life situation (maybe confront it?) but I forgot one thing...he’s the king of runaways.

I loved some of the plot twists in this story. I expected some cliche stuff but didn’t get that at all. I got a bit of repetition (maybe too much...) but nothing that would ruin a good story.
