Not Since Carrie: Forty Years of Broadway Musical Flops by Ken Mandelbaum

5.0

There's a moment in the first season of Smash where Tom and Sam talk about how bad a show Tom and his current boyfriend are about to see. "It's a train wreck!" they declare. "Uh, so why are we seeing it?" the boyfriend asks. "Because it's a train wreck!" is the gleeful response.

That's what this book is about, the train wrecks widely known and unknown. Carrie set the current standard of "Oh my god, what the hell were they thinking?" but there have been others before that and more to come (Spiderman, anyone?).

It's not the fastest read and the chapter devoted to the follow-up musical by the team who put together Hair lacked focus, in my opinion, but if you can't resist a theatrical train wreck, this one should go on your reading list.
