Him by Elle Kennedy, Sarina Bowen

5.0

This book was so fucking cute. I just finished rereading this book and I love it even more the second time. Jamie and Wes were the first M/M relationship I ever read and they are still my favorite M/M couple of all time. They are just too fucking cute. This reread is exactly what I needed right now, I am still hoping this series gets a third book!

Original review:
Here are two things you should know about me: I love hockey and I love a good romance. This book had both of those things. I also love a book that involves romance that is slightly forbidden which this one was. I mean two guys who are both hockey players is controversial for some people and they keep their relationship hidden from people so I would say it's pretty forbidden. This is also my first time reading an LGBT M/M new adult romance and I'm so excited I picked this one to read! I am in love with Ryan Wes and Jamie Canning. They have become two of my all time favorite male characters and I ship them together like the fist of god.

"He grins, and my heart melts in the usual way."

Ryan Wes and Jamie fist met each other in a hockey camp when they were young teenagers, and they go back to that camp every summer. Wes has been in love with Jamie since the very beginning, but Jamie has always been into girls (or at least he thought so). After one awkward summer night together at the camp when they were eighteen, Wes cuts Jamie out of his life and they both move on. But, now four years later, they are both suddenly thrown back into each others lives when they are playing against each other in the same hockey tournament. This book was so addicting, the writing style was great, I couldn't put it down. I read it in two sittings but I would have read it in one if life didn't get in the way. Jamie and Wes's relationship was so natural and pure and beautiful, I loved watching it unfold. I love that Jamie is so Californian and open minded and positive and optimistic and has a huge family (5 siblings). And Wes is so self conscious and broken and afraid of love and he has tattoos on his arms.

I loved reading about the flashbacks of the summers they were at the camp. The writing style flowed so nicely, and the characters both have a great sense of humor. There is so much humor in this book I laughed out loud many times. I loved watching them be coaches together to a team of teenage boys, and seeing them be role models for the boys.
I love how in the beginning Jamie only "goes gay" when he's drunk. That scene in the bar when Ryan is flirting with another guy and Jamie is getting jealous was so adorable. The way they would tease each other was fun to read about, and I loved seeing Jamie experiment with his sexuality. Those scenes when Jamie was watching porn with girls and guys and trying to figure out what turned him on were so funny. The way he feels so wrong about it, but then he's like "There's nothing wrong with this, I'm a red-blooded twenty two year old man. Not a virgin. Not a prude" I was dying. I also loved all the scenes on them swimming in the lake, especially the one when they went skinny-dipping late at night with people less than 100 yards away. And then when they had sex in the car and his back kept hitting the car horn, I was dying of laughter. I also want to mention that the sex scenes were written so well and I loved all of them. I was so upset during that scene with Killheather's father glaring at them and then saying: "fucking faggots" under his breath. I went into full blown mama bear mode and I was like AW HELL NO. It's so homophobic and rude and it pisses me off. Thankfully Pat, the owner of the camp defended them and it made me so happy. When Wes got a tattoo of the coordinates of Lake Placid I was dying. My heart hurt. It reminded me of Brokeback Mountain, "WE COULD HAVE HAD A REAL GOOD LIFE TOGETHER, BUT YOU DIDN'T WANT IT ENIS, SO WHAT WE GOT NOW IS BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" except they have Lake Placid. I loved seeing Jamie break the news to Holly (his former fuck buddy) that he wasn't seeing a girl but he was seeing a dude. Her reaction was priceless. Same with Jamie's family. I love Jamie's Mom. When she gave them both mugs that said "HIS" and on the bottom of Ryan's she wrote a sweet message for him. It made me so happy. I love seeing them finally come to the realization that they love each other and can live happily in Toronto together.
Their relationship is just so fucking cute, I could read about it all day. I'm so happy to know there is a sequel to this book because I love Jamie and Wes so fucking much and I can't wait to read more about them and their lives.
