The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Ahaha, I’m in danger!! I did not like this book at all. It was honestly just the lack of development I did not like. The plot had potential, but fell very short for me.
To start off, I feel like the world-building was very minimal, so I kind of didn’t get all the details I wanted. Like I’m still confused on the political aspects. I hope this is touched on more in the next two books.
Cardan...oh Cardan. He’s the best character in the book, but I found his backstory to be extremely generic. That being said, his character was given a bit more dimension at the end with his reaction to being given the crown. If he develops more in the next books, I can see myself liking him. He’s gotta develop past his toxic tendencies first, though.
Jude was one of my least favorites. I found her to be very flat. Her personality kind of shifted to benefit the plot. Her romance with Cardan and Locke both was so underdeveloped and I just cannot see Jude being in a relationship. It seems like her firehearted nature just...disappeared halfway through the book.
The book’s writing style just did not do it for me. It lacked some depth for me, and I did not like the dialogue. However, I am going to give the next two books a fair chance. I hope this series redeems itself for me :,).
