Ava's Demon, Book 1: Reborn by Michelle Fus

adventurous dark mysterious medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
The year is 3031, & when teenager Ava Ire is mortally wounded in an space travel accident, an alien demon named Wrathia Bellarmina offers her a second chance at life in exchange for help with her revenge plot.

And that's only a small part of what's going on here. There's also:

- Odin, a moody boy who's helpful to Ava but is on some kind of tight-lipped mission involving someone named Olai (he also has scary twin sisters)
- Gil, a boy who's way too deep into this cult called TITAN that's all the rage in the 31st century
- Maggie (Magnolia), a girl who has a pact similar to Ava's with a tree spirit named Tuls Tenebrose who lives in a plant dimension & spends his time painting pictures of someone named Ranunculae
- Strategos Six, who or may not be a robot but is definitely in charge of the Gate to Paradise

So yeah, it's a colorful cast of characters, which is fitting because this book is full of wonderful digital painting, & each character has their own color as a motif. Ava is green, Gil is blue, Maggie is green, etc. This is reflected in the character's speech bubbles as well as their surroundings; if a scene centers around Ava, the reds in those panels are very prominent, & likewise with green for Maggie, & so on. The way these colors flow into each other & combine is very pleasing & makes the book fun to flip through.

This is originally a webcomic, & I've learned that the online version includes some light animation & music, so I may have to give it a reread at avasdemon.com. The story throws a lot at the reader, & it took me a moment to orient myself, but I can tell Michelle Fus is developing a rich world & am stoked to read more.
