Of Blood and Aether by Harper Hawthorne

5.0

Rating: 5/5 Penguins
Quick Reasons: slow burn, steamy romance laced with a d/s dynamic; witty, delicious snark; exquisitely purple prose; I am SCREAMING into the void right now; why must these reads hurt me so badly?!; I need the next book YESTERDAY

HUGE thanks to Harper Hawthorne and The NerdFam for the title! My review is voluntarily written, and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.

“Mm, it’s hard to gauge how memorable a man can even be when you repeatedly run into him,” she replied with a sly grin. “I’ll have to get back to you on that. But you’ll have to stay away long enough to become a memory in the first place. You’re certainly a noteworthy stalker, though.”

I SWEAR I'm going to break something with all the tuna tantrums I've been throwing lately, Penguins. This read left me in no different a hurricane of an emotionally broken state. I need book 2. I need vengeance and answers and the sweet, sweet begging of forgiveness and a steamy make up scene PRONTO.

These characters are realistically motivated, filled with secrets and all the things that make them BREATHE for readers from the page. The prose is deliciously snarky, the world and character building divinely detailed. Nothing was missed; this story ebbs and flows so naturally, it is hard to put the book down. The romance is slow burn, steamy, and laced with a d/s dynamic that will leave readers who enjoy that sort of thing breathless. And the ending. It ALWAYS comes down to the ending, doesn't it?..... this one doesn't disappoint in the least.

Because in the face of so much pain and unavoidable despair, you learn to wear apathy like armor. A child weaned with blood on the tongue has no room to develop a taste for things like milk and honey.

I definitely recommend this to lovers of dark romantasies, romances with power exchange dynamics, and reads that will leave them absolutely emotionally mangled. The Fates are cruel and calculating, Penguins.... are you ready to face them?
