In Defense of Witches: The Legacy of the Witch Hunts and Why Women Are Still on Trial by Mona Chollet
4.0
4/5 stars. Audio book. The narrator did a wonderful job. Nathan from TikTok recommended this book and it is another hit for me. I truly enjoyed this book. I rated it 4 stars mostly because the book briefly discusses the legacy of witchcraft and it is covered briefly in the introduction, but it is not maintained as the book goes on. This was kind of unexpected as the book states, “the legacy of the witch hunts and why women are still on trial”. Still and all, it is incredibly written and shows the types of women that are persecuted. Mona Chollet discusses how independent women, women without children, and elderly women have all been subjected to scrutiny from society. I love the overarching theme of the book; misogyny in society has victimized women and continues to do so. What women are expected to do might not be what we want from life. This book was touching to me because all women, at some point, would have been considered a witch and subsequently, barred from society.
Overall, I enjoyed this book because it made me think about my life. Do I have a mind of my own? Am I doing things because I feel expected to do them or because I really want to? Am I content with my life as a woman and mother? I think any woman would enjoy reading this book, especially those with a “bold tongue and independent spirit”.
