The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave

emotional sad slow-paced

4.0

Historical fiction isn’t my typical genre, but I found myself pulled into this story about a group of women struggling to survive after a devastating storm tore through their small Norwegian fishing village.

I loved the writing in this book. I felt like I was transported into the past, but as atmospheric as it was, it wasn’t someplace I wanted to be. I was alternately depressed and angry as I read about what these women dealt with day to day. The queer representation was a surprise and the pleasant highlight in a primarily bleak tale.

I comforted myself by remembering this is fiction, only to learn it was inspired by true events. I’ve heard about the witch trials before; I even visited the Salem Witch Museum in Massachusetts, but nothing resonated as much as this story. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction.
