Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
5.0
This book is incredible. The world of Orisha is richly described, every character is complex and well-rounded, and the plot is compelling. I couldn’t put it down. It has everything I want in a fantasy novel: a well established world, a complex and explained magical system, well-rounded and complex characters, and a compelling story. There are very few flaws to this story, and those are vastly outweighed by the overflowing positives of this. book. I’m giving this book a 4.75 stars. It is really well written, the plot is incredible, and I am definitely going to be waiting impatiently for the next book. Tomi Adeyemi is a new writer I am going to be keeping my eye on, because she clearly has a brilliant creative mind. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
It should be mentioned to any interested reader that this book is political, as it relates to oppression and the struggles of black lives. As a white reader I don’t want to go too in depth about this element, simply because I do not feel I have the right perspective, however I will say that I really enjoyed this element. This novel’s setting and plot work as an easily accessible window into the lives of minorities being oppressed. It is easy to empathize with the characters and their struggle, and as a result the reader is able to recognize the struggle at work without feeling like they are being told a commentary on today’s society. And yet it takes very little thought to connect the struggles of the characters in this novel to the struggles of too many people in the world today.
Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested, and encourage everyone to pick it up and read it.
