A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
Did not finish book.
When I started reading this book, I couldn't stop talking about how wonderful it was to my friends and how much I was enjoying it. However, by the time I had just passed 150, the romance between Diana and Matthew took over any interesting or creative world building of witches, deamons, and vampires.
However, it isn't just the fact that there is the common trope in falling in love with a vampire despite the fact that it is dangerous and just not that great of an idea. No, Matthew is SO in love with her that he can't leave her alone and feels like he has to protect her all the time. Such as sneaking into her room before they've even met to see what she is like and following her, or having one of his minions follow her.
I don't know either Diana. I really don't because it doesn't stop there folks, that is just the tip of the iceberg. By page three hundred, he literally threatened to kill her if she doesn't follow his orders- which are meant to protect her and keep her from harm of course!
I am pissed that this relationship is even trying to be passed off as a romance because it's fucking crazy.
"But it's not my fault!" Matthew may scream. "I've been through so much and am so protective of her because of what happened to the two women I was with before and I don't want that to happen to Diana!
I am so done with you Matthew. Go fix your misogynistic asshole attitude that you are blaming on the fact that you are a vampire and then maybe we can talk.
As for the rest of the book, NOTHING HAPPENS. Everything past page 150 only really focuses on the budding romance between Diana and Matthew! Again, I don't mind this so much except for the fact that it is a terrible example of a romance that makes me physically ill. As I was trying to read this book, I was constantly slamming the book shut, trying to calm down because I couldn't handle Matthew's bullshit.
Don't read this book- there are much better supernatural stories out there.
