An excellent work of historical fiction. Wow. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a character grow up and struggle to do what's right in a world shaped by factors far out of her control. Incredibly compelling.

It is a war novel, so that includes violence of many varieties. However, descriptions of violence were never lingered on excessively, so while it was sometimes brutal, it wasn't gruesome.
