The Bone Key by Sarah Monette

5.0

Everything about this book felt curated just for me. The museums, the awkwardness, the mystery, the horror, everything in this book is all my favorite things rolled into one. I knew upon reading the first few pages that this would become one of my all time favorite books. And it absolutely did.

Typically, I hate first person narrators. But Monette’s voice mixed with such a compelling (and, dare I say, relatable) main character that is Kyle Murchison Booth I felt I barely noticed, and if I did, I hardly cared. Monette has such a gorgeous vernacular and voice throughout this book that reads closely to her influences of Lovecraft but develops it in such a unique and individual way.

Each of the short stories in this collection are compelling, exciting, and intriguing, and I was never bored reading any of them. I can’t get over how much I adore Booth’s character, he’s a geeky, awkward delight that I found myself resonating with.

Genuinely, an absolute marvel of a collection that I will be highly recommending to anyone and everyone.
