“Sanity’s overated, my darling.”

Second time read, first time review. The last time I read this series this book was my favourite, and I think it’s safe to say that I have the same preferences this time around, because THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD.

⇢The Plot
I both love and hate the trope where the female main character gets imprisoned or kidnapped (and I say female because it ALWAYS seems to be the heroine), but I have to say that it completely served in this book, and mostly because Sydney was awesome. It was definitely hard to read some parts, but seeing Sydney make plans, use her magic and help the others in the Re-education centre was really fun.

“Out of old habit, I put my hand on my collarbone, touching a cross that was no longer there. Don't let them change me, I prayed silently. Let me keep my mind. Let me endure whatever there is to come.”

Obviously since Sydney was literally locked away for a huge portion of this book there weren’t as many interactions between our leading protagonists, but there was still a ton of romance in this book because of the Spirit Dreams and the great reunion they had when Sydney was released. And of course the iconic elopement ;)

“Ivashkov," she repeated, her face the picture of serenity. "My name is Sydney Ivashkov.”

My only comment is just that I wish there was a better reaction to their wedding. I mean, no one even knew they were dating at court (and only a few people outside of court too), and it felt like people should have been WAY more surprised than they were?? I’m sorry but if a human and Moroi who I thought hated one another and I hadn’t seen in a while suddenly appeared in court in wedding clothes I might just react with a bit more enthusiasm?? Especially Sydney’s dad… He was angry but not nearly as angry as I thought he’d be. Overall, I just felt like that scene was a wasted opportunity to write something iconic…
