Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

"It's terrifying when you consider that every thought we have, every choice we could possibly make, creates a new world." It's ironic because lately I have been reading books and watching movies that deal with this idea: that after every single decision we make in our lives, there is an alternate version of us out there living out the opposite decision. I read [b:Maybe in Another Life|23492661|Maybe in Another Life|Taylor Jenkins Reid|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1424970519s/23492661.jpg|43082842] last month, which also deals with this concept, but in a more contemporary and romantic way. I also recently watched Mr. Nobody with Jared Leto, which also shows two versions of his character living two completely different lives based off one decision he made as a kid. However, Dark Matter is unlike anything I have ever read before. It takes this idea of creating different versions of ourselves with every decision we make and it goes crazy with it. This book follows a man named Jason who is abducted one night on his way home and when he wakes up - the world he wakes up in is not his own. His wife is not his wife and his son was never born and under impossible circumstances he has to find a way back to his loved ones.
This book is intense and unpredictable and thought provoking and everything I love in a story. I had no idea what to expect jumping into this story, which I think is the best way to go into it. The first chapter of this book is one of the most intense and interesting first chapters I've ever read in a book. I was hooked right away and I knew this was going to be a new favorite of mine. Every chapter from that point on added to my confusion and my curiosity and my need to know what was happening. I couldn't put it down and my head was spinning with all the craziness and the plot twists but it was just so fucking good.
I loved the relationship between Jason and Daniela and I shipped it so hard. I love that even though this is a mind-bending, totally crazy story, at it's roots this is a love story. It's about a man who will do anything to get back with his wife and his son. Jason's character reminded me of Walter White in Breaking Bad in the sense that he could have been a successful scientist but instead he's a teacher. It made me think what would Walter White's alternate self be like if he pursued science instead of just being a high school teacher? I also love the way this book is written. It's very easy to follow when it comes to the crazy sci-fi parts, but it's also written very beautifully and the imagery the words gave me was stunning. With passages like this: "The entire span of my life yawning out ahead of me. It's the beautiful thing about youth. There's a weightlessness that permeates everything because no damning choices have been made, no paths committed to, and the road forking out ahead is pure, unlimited potential. I love my life but I haven't felt that lightness of being in ages." I just love the way Blake Crouch writes, it's so beautiful and it makes me feel nostalgic for some reason.
This book makes you question the decisions you've made in your life and makes you think if you are the happiest version of yourself. What really matters to you in life? Happiness? Success? If another version of you out there saw you, would they be jealous of you? Or ashamed? Everything that we see is our reality, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's the only reality, because everything is possible. It's all very thought provoking. It also makes me think about the little things in life I take for granted, like this: "What a miracle it is to have people to come home to every day. To be loved. To be expected. I thought I appreciated every moment, but sitting here in the cold, I know I took it all for granted. And how could I not? Until everything topples, we have no idea what we actually have, how precariously and perfectly it all hangs together."
The ending was mind-boggling and made my heart clench and I loved it so much. I thought I had it all figured out and I didn't see any of the plot twists coming. It was just written so well, and this story is so unique and thought provoking and I've honestly never read anything like this. This story and these characters will be on my mind for a very long time.
