The Institute by Stephen King

4.0

This was really good! Another Stephen King with kids with supernatural powers, but still very good and unique!

I’m going to copy my commentary below.

- 1% this narrator is such a Stephen King narrator
- I had to look up what a night knocker is. Never heard of it before. And how can this job only pay $100 a week? Assuming minimum wage, he would be working 13.79 hours each week. That is slightly less than 2 full shifts (11pm to 6am). It would honestly make more sense if he got paid $100 per shift- that would be $14.28 per hour. I’m pretty sure that is closer to what most “minimum wage” jobs are getting paid nowadays. I think Stephen King is just really bad with fact checking when it comes to reality and his numbers. I had the same problem with The Long Walk (yes it is possible for someone to walk for days like that, but not at the speed that King said was the minimum). I’m going to pretend like he didn’t say $100 a week and instead said minimum wage.
- 4% yeah, they just said he will work 5 nights a week. That’s 35 hours. He would be making $2.85 an hour at that rate. It would have to be before 1978 for him to make that little.
- 5% he literally just made a comment about how minimum wage is $7.25/hour in reference to this warehouse job. How the heck did that $100 a week business get through edits by the publisher
- 9% I find it hilarious that Mambo No 5 was just mentioned. Stephen King’s wife theatrened to leave him because he was so obsessed with that song when it came out
- 10% “He wondered what it was like to have a brain that didn’t seem to know all the answers.”
- 29% I really wish that these kids could go full Eleven and kill everyone.
- 46% of everything to happen so far in this book, the fact that Luke is about to rip the chip out of his ear makes me the most squeamish. Oh god he is going to knife his ear?! EEEEEEEKKKKK
-  50% sooo this is a smart kid. If he thinks this train is going to Massachusetts, I assume it really is. So how does it wind up south?
- 64% NOOOOO THE MOTEL GUY KNOWS!!!! LUKEEEE! Lukkkkkeee!
- 66% she mentioned The Outsiders. I haven’t read that book by Stephen king yet, but I’m assuming it’s connected in some way? And she now also mentioned Jerusalem’s Lot and how everyone disappeared from that town 40 years ago
- 73% omg just watch whatever is on the flash drive for god’s sake.  The anticipation is driving me crazy
- 74% the end of the world?! Are you really going to leave us hanging with that?! AGHHHH
- 75% LETS GO KIDS!!!! Hell yes! Give them a taste of their own medicine!!!
- 80% put the guns down. This isn’t playing. You’re in the south now. 😂
