Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

Every time I read a new TJR book I tell everybody it’s my new favourite TJR book but seriously now… THIS is my new favourite TJR book by a mile. It was actually exquisite and I can’t believe I didn’t read it for so long.

The cast of characters that make up this book really solidified it as my favourite. I don’t know how she does it, but she manages to outdo herself every time. Every protagonist she creates is so different and interesting in their own completely unique way, I’m obsessed. In this book as well she really nails every single side character. I’m not usually a fan of books that sprinkle in random perspectives but this felt like a game for me, I was trying to figure out who was getting their own novel next. I secretly hope it’s all of them, even within the span of a few pages she makes these fictional people fascinating.

I want a Keeping Up with the Kardashians style TV show but revolving around the Rivas. I am actually fascinated not only by their individual stories, but their family dynamics and internal thinking and feelings. They were such a great group of people to follow, I was in love with absolutely all of them. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it a million times over again, TJR really knows how to write her female characters so effortlessly and they’re so authentic and relatable every time it’s actually crazy to me. The way she can crawl inside my mind and pinpoint my exact feelings over and over again is eerie. She gets it. She just gets it.

The plot, the writing, the pacing - kept me on the edge of my seat. There is nobody out there better at drip feeding me suspense than TJR. The only author I can hand on heart rely on to keep me gripped from start to finish and leave me feeling entirely empty afterwards. And I love her for it. This was completely unpredictable, fun and surprisingly a little bit sinister in some moments. It was completely unexpected, a summer read like I’ve never come across before but one that has now set the standards so high other books should be scared.

I love it. I love it, I love it, I love it.
