On the surface this book isn't one that would normally appeal to me, but there was something almost magical about the writing.

Set in an undisclosed time period (though one with aeroplanes, jeans and busy city centres) this tells the separate stories of Tommy and Charlotte.

Tommy is a Tinker in the Scottish highlands, travelling around with the seasons, but returning each summer with his family to the same piece of land.  Charlotte is a young carer whose world expands when she's given a bike and she discovers the open countryside.  A friendship develops between the two teens, and each summer they find themselves together again, and somehow apart from the rest of the world.

Tragedy strikes both families, with Charlotte and Tommy each unaware of what has happened to the other, and this novel is the story of them trying to find their way back to what they know and to each other.
