Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas

adventurous relaxing medium-paced

4.0

This book was a mixed bag. There were really strong stretches, and many things I liked, but also some inexplicable things. I think from 15 percent of the book in to 60ish percent it was very good.

I didn't understand why/when Devon fell in love with Kathleen. Instalove is one thing, but the setup was not for that. So that was a bit awkward. Devon was unlikable, at points gross in the beginning. While he largely shed all of that through the book there were reversions to it. Kathleen was indignant, but mostly reasonable and when she wasn't it made sense to her character. There was a lot of back and forth in the later part of the book that was annoying to me. They would have the same fight over and over so it just made me think this is a couple that is constantly going to be fighting their whole lives. It's not a dynamic I enjoy. Also I thought it was really weird that marriage was not even discussed for so long?

The quiet moments were really nice especially their letters. The plot with the estate was very interesting even if it was resolved quickly at the end. I really enjoyed the cast of characters. Very strong and full on their own. I loved her relationship with West, it grew to be very sweet. Some of the girls were interesting and I loved them together. I loved Helen so I will be reading her book. I already know I'm skipping Pandora's.

The writing was really strong. I think Lisa writes what I expect when I think of historical romance, she is a standard. I will be reading more of her works.
