She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen

3.0

this is a lesbian highschool romance novel, but more than that, it's a book about a girl recovering from what was apparently the craziest breakup ever. in the acknowledgements kelly quindlen calls this book "campy and ridiculous" and honestly that's so real. it's like lesbian high school musical

i think part of the reason i didn't care much about the main getting-over-my-ex plot was because we really don't get much else of scottie's character at all. she's a lesbian, she's a basketball player, she loves deeply.. that's about it. i feel like i had no time to care about scottie before we got into the tally arc. i was definitely skimming pages towards the end.

irene, the main love interest, is probably the most developed character of the story. she actually has an observable personality besides cheerleading and lesbianism, and i really liked the way her mind works and the things she had to say.

a smaller gripe i had with this is that some of the arguments scottie and irene have towards the beginning are actually crazy venemous and angry. it was almost startlingly mean- usually in enemies-to-lovers i find it's more of a quiet brewing hatred, but these girls were verbally nuking each other for multiple chapters. at some points i was just waiting for their conversations to be over

i know this is an absolutely insane thing to say but i almost wish scottie got into a physical fight with charlotte pascal it would've been the icing on the cake seriously can you imagine. sigh. never would have worked w their characters though</spoiler<
