They Lurk by Ronald Malfi
3.5
First story really good. Would love to read more of it - creepy backwoods cryptid things are right up my alley!
Second was forgettable. A sort of MR James attempt. Didn't like it, overlong, and not scary.
Third story was good. Gory Stephen King vibes. Nothing earth shattering and I wish he hadn't tried to make it a metaphor as I think it muddied the story, but it was still a fun gore trip.
Fourth -decent. But I think if you've read The Mist you kind of don't need to read this?
Fifth - my joint favourite. Excellent Texas Chain Saw/Resident Evil 7 setting and I am a sucker for mother/daughter stuff, so I was absolutely hooked. Could have done without the worm.
Two fantastic stories, two good, and one I really didn't like. Overall, a strong collection. I'm looking forward to my next Malfi.
