Three Kinds of Lucky by Kim Harrison

2.0

I love when magic meets science, and the premise Three Kinds of Lucky provided was amazing! Its execution was less than stellar.

Repetitive writing (how many times can someone "scuff to a stop" or experience "fizzes and bubbles") mixed with an indecisive shoot-from-the-hip protagonist with no strong moorings aside from keeping herself afloat, and not even doing that in an edgy way, left me underwhelmed. She's not even a shell character, just kind of a passive/permissive rag doll getting flung around from plot point to plot point, never doubting or making her own surprise choices when presented with terrible options.

A lot of the plot including some of the twists felt predictable, and the climate and waste themes were a touch overdone without adequate action or commentary to balance them out.

I'm not sure if I'll return to this series, but here's hoping she can do something with her world now that she's given us the lay of the land.
