If you are going into this book with high expectations then you're doing the right thing because the book will exceed all your expectations.
Read this book if you're interested in :
1. Clan wars : I didn't know gang wars were this painful and exciting till I read this book
2. Characters : The story of each characters is so beautifully woven that by the end of this book you'll know why that character put their right foot before walking. In the sense that, their thoughts, actions, words everything has meaning and interwoven deeply with their personality. And that is explained wonderfully.
3. World building : Exquisite. Right from the religion to Gods to men and the jade, everything is broken down and built with care.
4. Pain : There's so much pain. Pain in every sense. Be it in death or anguish or inner struggles of characters, you meet with pain of every forms.
5. Women : The set of women characters are not much but whatever numbers they are in, each of them is so different from the rest and strong in their own right that it was exhilarating to read about them.
6. It's a thick book but easy to get by because the chapters aren't that long. However much of the book at first is just world building so be patient. Personally I loved that part because it felt I was reading the history and geography of a place and I was frantically taking notes and understanding how this Janloon city works because the writing style was so good and the story just had me in it's grip.
7. The deep feeling of belonging to a clan has been seeped into the story. Even the clan oaths are so adrenaline pumping that will make you want to recite it continuously. A story of warriors and family and honor is a story everyone appreciates and love and Fonda Lee has sold us to it exactly that.
At this point nothing is stopping me from running off to Janloon and pledge my allegiance to No Peak Clan. In short you will not just read this story but also feel it in your bones.
