Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
4.0
“Ink and parchment flowed through her veins. The magic of the Great Libraries lived in her very bones. They were a part of her, and she a part of them.”
THIS WAS SO! GOOD!
admittedly i’m always a sucker for books about books but like...sorcery of thorns felt like all of my favorite books do—like i’m falling into a world that feels like home. a world where for a few hours, the real world doesn’t exist, nothing exists except characters who you come to know as friends and a world that envelops you in a warm hug.
I loved so much about this book. Elisabeth was such a great main character—strong, smart, but also with very real and understandable weaknesses. Nathaniel was like every fantasy boy i’m already in love with—charming, funny with a dash of a dark past for a little angst. Even Silas, who, without spoiling it, I came to love so very much. Such a great cast. My one complaint is that I think the villain could have been stronger. i think his plan and what he was trying to do was sufficiently evil but the villain himself was a little underwhelming to me. might just be personal though idk.
I’m also really thrilled that this is a standalone. Petition for more standalone fantasy because Some authors write three 800 page books in one series which is just...a lot! i’ll say it! this was a breath of fresh air: short, sweet, but still impactful and engaging. The magic system and world were very straightforward and allowed the characters to really shine. i feel like this is my longest review in a minute but i just!!! loved this book so much please read it
