Remember My Name by Laurencia Hoffman

4.0

When you get emotions ranging from 'What is happening?' to 'OMG WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!!' you know you have to write a huge rant review.

My Rating : 3.5/5

Remember my name is a story about loss, abuse, pain, second chance, more pain and a whole lot of emotional suspense and dark themes and mind fauckery. Trust me when I say this.. You will pull your hair out trying to figure out how the story actually ended. I did. And it's not a good feeling you guys. It's definitely not.
.
First, I really liked how the author started this story and the over-all theme of it. I didn't really read the blurb before I started this book, so the theme and the characters kept me guessing. It's a very hard hitting Contemporary with dark themes, emotionally damaged characters, sharp dialogues to cut you, lots of manipulation. It's heavy and makes you feel heavy with sadness (which was perfect for me).
Shane was the perfect character to narrate the story because of his thought process and how he views himself and the world. His past dictates him and his actions and that definitely showed in his relationship with others as well. Cal was the perfect guy for Shane and he was so understanding, caring, gave a lot without expecting anything in return. It looks a little manipulative and abusive, but I think the way the author has written Shane's character is to give us the difference between their traumas and how it affects different people.
.
The writing style and the flow of the story was not something that complimented the storyline. Like the flashbacks could have been placed at much better scenes and the present day scenes were cut abruptly sometimes which threw me off balance. But if I ignored that, I was pretty invested in Shane and Cal. Especially Cal and how he reacts to Shane's attitude and his mood changes.

Coming to the SPOILERS!...
.
Now I get why Ethan and Nora would feel like separating him from their kids and why Shane thinks he doesn't deserve anything good, BUT COME ON !! To end the story like that?? Omg I felt like murdering Victor myself and show Shane that Cal was right there for him! omg I can't. The ending just stopped abruptly and I can't seen to come out of that cliffhanger (Can you even call it a cliffhanger?). I honestly believe that I didn't get the whole book (Just kidding.) and that Cal with his Journalist mind, figures out what actually happened to Shane and just give the truth to the world. (Even if they don't end up together, I just want his dad to die okay?) I don't want a happy ending, but atleast let everybody know that Shane suffered okay? Omg Book gods why do you make me suffer like this.. Anyways.. Coming back to the story, I think this story has so much potential to just rip hearts out of people with some slight changes to story building, character development and writing style!
.
Overall, I really enjoyed (Not) the story and the charactera and the themes it discussed. It's a lot to process, but I wish we got a closure towards the end with respect to the characters and the storyline. It was quite an open ending which not everyone might like.
