Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova

adventurous emotional funny medium-paced

4.75

An emotional exploration on grief, Monstrilio reminds me of a Guillermo del Toro movie (he would've made an awesome film adaptation!): atmospheric, violent, but darkly humorous with heart. The choice of character perspective is very inspired, constantly upsetting my expectation (I couldn't predict most of the character choices—yet they all made sense in context). There might be a few moments of lull where editing would've helped, but overall this is a great example of literary horror, where both gore and emotional depth are delivered in full force.
