Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
3.0
I didn’t like Act One at all really but I started to see from it what was coming and what secrets were likely in the past of the characters. Act Two was definitely better and finally made me feel for the characters a little at least.
I’m not a huge fan of works from or about this particular period in American history. Even the satire and the criticisms are a bit tough to slog through when seeing middle class middle aged white men complain about their disappointment at not striking it rich or making it big in the American dream. Like yeah fine, but that was the point of capitalism; sell you the dream but you can never reap the rewards. And from the perspective of the characters whining they still had it good compared to others.
I don’t usually like invalidating anyone’s feelings or sufferings “because someone else has it worse”. That’s true but it doesn’t make the suffering any less for either. But ugh, just something about it in 1950s writings just makes me cringe.
Overall it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t something that resonated with me for the reasons I think it was supposed to. I dunno, maybe I’ll go read the cliff notes and see what I missed.
