This is a tough one to review. We Ate the Dark shows the author’s potential and I’m interested to see what she does next, but I have mixed feelings about this debut.
The friendship, the love, and the family that Frankie, Sophia, Cass, Poppy, and Marya created was my favorite part of the story. Finder and Keeper were cool characters and there were plenty of elements for an incredible gothic, witchy fantasy/horror story.
Unfortunately, there was so much going on things didn’t flow cohesively, which made it difficult to finish. It felt like the author had 5-6 possible directions for the story and instead of choosing 1 and building the plot around it, it was just a free for all. Other worlds, devil worship, resurrected dead, murder plots-all little tidbits thrown in without anything to anchor them.
