2022 reread, in anticipation of the next book coming out: I needed a tough protagonist that can be beaten, bruised & broken and still stubbornly come out fighting. Toby fills that & more. Don't mistake me - she hurts & she grieves & she struggles. None of it is *easy*. But she perseveres. She's very human, for a changeling.
