You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson
5.0
High school isn’t easy for Liz, but she tries to blend in as much as possible. But when the scholarship she was hoping to receive falls through, she has to find an alternative way of coming up with the money for college. This then leads her signing up for prom and playing along with all the rules and events for a chance to win prom queen and the grand prize money it entails. This novel was really cute, wholesome and overall endearing. This just left the reader feeling warm and fuzzy inside. All the plots and characters were well crafted. The plot was fast-paced and had the reader continuously flipping pages to find out what would happen next. It was so engaging and the way that everything unfolded was just so well done. The way we had the main plot, then secondary plots that circled around the main one so that everything was connected in a really nice way, without being confusing or diminishing to either storyline. The reader really loved the queer storyline and how that played into prom and into our main character’s relationships. It was so balanced and handled with such care. Also, the way the main character interacted with all the characters felt really real and authentic. She had so many complex relationships in her life and it was so absorbing to see her communicate and navigate through them all. From her best friends, to the new friends she was making and the old ones she was re-making, it all felt so genuine. Her relationship with her family was also well done, not to mention the amazing brother-sister relationship they had was just the cutest and most supportive. Her journey from being the shy girl who was too afraid to be her true self to the one who’s unabashedly her by the end was such a beautiful transformation. It wasn’t always the easiest path, but it was one she stuck to and one that really paid off; it was an inspiring story to read. In the end, this had a bit of everything, solid friendships, a cute budding romance, drama, some sorrow, but most of all love; highly recommend.
