Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep
4.0
This one started out a bit slow for me but once it got going, things really got going. Jennifer Estep tends to repeat certain things so that you know how Gwen had her first really big experience with psychometry and that led to her mother staying late at the precinct and getting t-boned and being killed by a drunk driver. Gwen has guilt over this. The fact that Gwen slips out and visit Grandma Frost for her advice and baked goods and how Gwen feels about the Sphinxes that guard the gates to the Mythos Academy make her feel. A lot of that is repeated, I find myself skipping through a lot of that.
What happened in the last book is repeated, how her friend is a Valkyrie. But I promise it'all worth it to wade, read or skip over that to get to the meat of the story.
The stakes are raised in this one. The Mythos students are at a ski resort for a Winter Carnival and the students from another academy are also there. Gwen is still nursing a broken heart so she's looking for someone to take her mind off of that. But she doesn't know how to ski and hanging out on the bunny slopes isn't exactly where the rest of the Spartans, Romans, Vikings, and Valkyries will be.
But Gwen has a nifty trick for that and soon she's off the bunny slopes and having fun. The Winter Carnival is a bit creepy, but she's hoping to meet up with the new guy she's focusing on. But with Gwen things are never simple and it seems there will always be someone after her as she's Nike's Champion. That doesn't stop even on the mountain. There are some very unexpected surprises, some very nice, in this one and again, I thought I had things figured out, but didn't. I liked Gwen a lot more in this one. She grew with me in this one, I think she will continue to.
