Tales from the Café by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

4.0

I was swept away by the story telling in 'Before the coffee gets cold' earlier in the year while in Japan and spotted the sequel near the end of my trip so thought it would make for a beautiful souvenir. The perfect tiny book to kick off the Chapters for Change Readathon.

Here's what I liked about the book:
-Nice to hear and see the lives of familiar characters play out against the back drop of the cafe as well as meet some new ones.
-Love the structure of the book, four chapters each focusing on another time traveller. Just as you think the story is a bit boring or not going anywhere, a twist happens that tugs at your heart and takes you by surprise.
-The focus on the cycle of life and the importance of being happy as a way of honouring people who have passed was beautifully articulated. This sentiment will certainly leave an impression on me.

Here's what I didn't:
-I got really muddled again between the characters. Reading it within two days helped but I still got confused and had to flick back on occasion.
-It was good to have a character tree at the start of the novel but there were spoilers within it I feel.

Overall it was lovely and a little heartbreaking to be swept back in to the world of the Funiculi Funicula. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
