Replacement by Jordan Rivet

This was one of my SPSFC semifinal reads. I saw it was the shortest read and decided to get it done, and it was so so good!

The premise is simple, and the plot isn't overly complicated, but I loved the simplicity of it and the personal stakes.

Jane is a clone who wants to find others like her. She's a leftover clone who doesn't know why she was created and who else are there in her batch of clones. In a world where clones are created in batches for specific purposes, she has no purpose. In her quest to find her origins and purpose, she is foiled by the lack of records.

Unexpectedly, she's offered a chance to learn more when she is hired to take the place of Janie, who was part of her batch. Janie has died in an accident and a corporate head needs Jane to take her place to fool his son who was Janie's best friend. Jane soon realises that nothing is as it seems, and her quest for answers takes her to the very things that got Janie killed.

The mystery of Janie's death is wrapped up nicely and we learn more about Jane and Janie's origins, but there are still more questions than answers. Though the plot is more or less tied up by the end, the unresolved mysteries are enough to keep interest in the rest of the series.

I loved this book. If you're a fan of YA and Science fiction with low personal stakes, advanced technology, great characters and immersive world building, this book is for you.
