The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

5.0

The House in the Cerulean Sea written by T.J. Klune, narrated by Daniel Henning

“They fear what they don’t understand. And that fear turns to hate for reasons I’m sure even they can’t begin to comprehend”.

Linus Baker is an overweight 40-yo caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He is sent on a secret mission from Extremely Upper Management to oversee if there’s any wrongdoing at an orphanage on an island off Marysus. The most “dangerous” or “different” magical kids are sent here. What he discovers is not what he originally imagined.

This enchanting & delightful story is about acceptance, kindness, and love. The children characters are extremely lovable, hilarious, and splendidly crafted. My favorite is of course is Talia – a little spitfire female gnome. She’s ready to bash you with her shovel and bury you in her garden but she’s actually pretty sensitive.

“At one point, Lucy drew a finger across his neck, eyes rolling back in his head, tongue hanging out. Talia nodded in agreement”. (Talia & Lucy were the best duo when they were together LOL)

I laughed A LOT, I sobbed at the end & I hugged this book many times because on my most anxious days, reading this story gave me so much comfort. It’s like a big warm hug.

Linus followed rules & regulations to a tee starts realizing that sometimes rules aren’t meant to protect the ones who need it the most. It’s about realizing your family & heart can be found in the most unexpected places & love, compassion and protection of those you love is most imperative.

TJ Klune wrote an incredible fantasy that included LBGTQIA+ characters with an evolving sweet love story. A charmingly sweet, heartwarming & wholesome story that is about diversity, acceptance, love & found family. The narrator did a brilliant job voicing all the different characters.

This has topped as my favorite book of all time & that I’ll be revisiting often. We will meet again, Linus, Arthur, Zoe the Island Sprite, Talia, Theodore the wyvern, Sal the were-pomerian, Lucy(ifer), Phee the forest sprite & Chauncy (the green bellhop).
