Frankie is a 20 year old from a "nice" well to do family where the men serve their country and the women dress appropriately and stay at home. When war breaks out with Vietnam she signs up to be a nurse.
The novel takes us through her training and experiences "in country", often fairly graphically depicted, but more importantly about her struggle when she returns home. Even other veterans deny that she was there, "there were no women in Vietnam", her mental health deteriorates and the VA won't help her.
This is a well-researched, emotional story of one woman's fight to work out who she really is, as always with Hannah very readable and pulls at the heartstrings,
