The plot is mostly well-constructed and compelling, though I saw the biggest twist coming early on. Maybe I've simply read too many mysteries – if an author tells you x, but doesn't show you y, it's likely that z. However, guessing the twist didn't subtract much from the intrigue of the story.

The characters all have their secrets, some of them ugly. Bree and Sophie are interesting and have plenty of promise, but ultimately, they only hint at a complexity that is not fully explored. The male characters felt flat and interchangeable to me. I feel that the novel is plot-driven rather than character-driven, and that's why it works: I'm not fully convinced by the characters individually, but as an ensemble, they carry the story rather well.

The writing is suspenseful and fast-paced, for most of the book very exciting and fun. The story falters and drags a bit in the middle, but then picks up again towards the finale. However, the ending is a bit too smooth for my liking, too glib and forced.

And it left me wondering: Did I actually like this book? After a lot of deliberation, my verdict is that I liked it, but it didn't thrill or enthrall me. It's fast, it's fun, it's easy to read, but it does not have much substance. For me, it's a «can read» rather than a «must read».
