I found this book quite slow-going and had to pay attention to the changing time-lines as every now and again the author threw in a chapter from another period, not just the two main years of when the story took place.
I enjoy Morton's writing and did feel for the characters in this book, but ultimately there was no surprise in the way the story went, other than than that yes, she did go there! Totally unbelievable ending with far too many coincidences, even in the much smaller world of 1930s England.
This won't put me off reading more of her work, but she's not an author I actively seek out
