Lindon, the main character, I found to be an interesting and engaging character who is well-written and likeable. He comes across as unfailingly polite and constantly curious, but who is intent on advancing his cultivated level, and a belief that he can do it.
The plot follows Lindon as he finds himself, a Copper soul, in a city full of Gold souls, who are searching a newly emerged temple for an ancient mystic weapon, along with other treasures. This involves using prisoners to search the temple, which is overrun with Dread beasts and Remnants. The prisoners are comprised of the weakest members of society, which places Lindon in jeopardy due to his low standing, so he is forced to find ways to avoid this fate.
In this book, Lindon meets several characters, who it seems will be very important to him going forward, and also seems to set up the course of the series, or at least what it is working towards, which is showing great promise so far.
