I found this book the reading equivalent of type 2 fun - not very enjoyable at the time but once finished, and considered, I can appreciate it a lot more. The lead character, an unlikeable, rich, white South African at the time of apartheid has bought a farm to be a weekend farmer. He's unaware of his privilege, thinks he runs the property on the one day a week he is there, and is contemptuous of his black employees, who do the actual work. The book contrasts what he thinks with the actual reality.
It is difficult to read and take in and there are often confusing paragraphs where he is having imaginary or recollected conversations with different people at different times. His unlikeability don't make it any easier, but I'm glad I stuck with it as it does work better once it's finished and you can take it all in as a whole.
