Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

3.0

First things first, I guess I should add my voice to the choir singing the "This is not Blade Runner" tune. I like to think I went in not expecting it to be a novelization of the film. And yet, it seemed more different than what I thought it would be. It almost feels like the two works are from two separate genres. There are some elements that are the same, but the feel is very different. A lot of that is differences with the androids. I feel they are more active in the film. There, they are working towards an end goal. Here, it seems like they wouldn't do anything of note if the main character wasn't hunting them down. They also feel more of a threat in the novel. Part of that is their lack of action, but it's also that our hero seems to almost win by accident in all of their encounters.

There were a few things I did like better here. There was an odd occurrence in the middle that I don't want to spoil. I will say that having read a different work by this author, I was expecting a different explanation for what happened. An unexplained shifting between two realities. But it turned out not to be the case, and I rather enjoyed what he did there.
