We are introduced to 3 different characters with chapters and voices. Gilmore. She's a former war warrior who now works as a criminal leader while raising her two girls as a single mother. I love this fierce momma. Rednow, an aged warrior with smoke smith magic who heads an infamous mercenary organisation. Finally, there's Orberesis, a petty thief who has gained a cult following by convincing people that he is God, despite having severe difficulties performing any of the god-like tasks expected of him. That's one intriguing cast of characters I've ever seen. Another intriguing twist on the magic is that if you are dying, you can test the smoke to see whether it heals you... Although it will eventually kill you, you may gain some years. The odds are favourable.
