Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol

5.0

This semi-fictional graphic memoir was an absolute treat to read. It follows the author, Vera Brosgol, and her summer at an all Russian kids camp. It begins with a relatable anecdote, expressing how she felt about being different from the American kids she grew up with. This part especially got me because I understand how it feels to share treats native to your culture and being made fun of or shunned for them. It seems silly, but when you're young, barely ten years old, those sort of experiences stick with you.

Vera's candid look into her desire to fit in showcased her immaturity, her impulsiveness, and her desperation for friendship. However, Vera's growth throughout was satisfying as you saw her learn and observe the people and animals around her. This especially exemplifies Vera's drawing abilities in her compositions and storytelling. Her mixture of her experiences with historical and cultural influences creates a brilliant, entertaining, and empathetic read.
