The Maid by Nita Prose
4.0
I started this one with no real idea what it was about other then, well, a maid. Based on the cover, I assumed that it was something that would be set in an English manor in the 1800's or something. I was incorrect, which made it better I think. Molly is a maid at a seemingly prestigious hotel and to say she's very good at her job is the understatement of the year. She recently lost her Gran and is still grieving that loss quote heavily, though not in any self-destructive way; in fact, in a healthy way of using her memories of her Gran's wisdom to guide her through most situations. This makes it sound kind of hokey and more like a cozy mystery, which I guess it maybe could be categorized as, but it's much more than that. Molly struggles in social situations, is often confused by social cues and though it isn't said, I would venture to assume (I know, I know) she probably has a severe case of social anxiety disorder, among other things, had Gran ever had her tested. All of this makes her delightfully smart, yet naïve, earnest and eager to please and just the best person you could want in your inner circle. I very much wanted to be friend with her. Molly discovers the body of a prominent guest one morning when she goes to clean a room and things go absolutely haywire from there. This is where I can't say more without giving things away, but trust Molly is smack dab in the thick of it, even though she doesn't fully realize it. This book was delightful and sweet, and even though I could see how things were going, I wasn't able to work out everything, which I like in a mystery, cozy or otherwise.
