Endling: The First by Katherine Applegate

4.0

This book didn't live up to the first of the series. It was darker, more violent, and missing some of the sweetness of [b:The Last|35887524|The Last (Endling, #1)|Katherine Applegate|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1517291088l/35887524._SY75_.jpg|26321709].

There was danger. Too much of it, even. The entire beginning of this story was full of battles, dangerous escapes, and near-deaths. I had a hard time seeing beyond the constant violence. It was a completely different read than the previous one (which was what I'd expected).

Towards the end, the story's tone started shifting. Suddenly, I was seeing the friendships, the love between those friends, their courage and determination, that I remembered from the first book. Byx overcame fears. She learned to believe in herself. Lead others. Take responsibility for her decisions.
SpoilerShe discovered more dairnes. And, found her place. Not among her own kind, but among her friends.
I loved watching Byx growing into herself. This was when I started caring about the battles fought, the daring escapes and the many dangers. This was then I decided to give this book four stars instead of three. And that I want to read the next book, after all.

Content:
This book contained more violence than the first. There were battles, torture, and deaths.
SpoilerThere was a species that crushed bones, ate peoples' flesh, and hung their heads up for display. Byx and her friends were caught in their trap and nearly killed by them.

Hanadru, the Pure Spirit of Tobble's people, was mentioned twice. In Tobble's words, this god was the great artist who lives in the clouds and paints the fate of all on her great easel. Once, there was a discussion revealing that no one but Tobble believed in this god.
