This was goooooooooood! I usually like to read at night to relax and help me fall asleep. This is the first book in a while that kept me up each night.

Basically, an as-yet-unexplained event gives super powers to a portion of the population; however, they all use their powers to oppress and rule over normal humans. A tragic interaction with an "Epic" lead a boy to seek out a group of resistance fighters.

What could have been a simple or formulaic story is actually a brilliant first chapter that is a complete story itself, but also lays the groundwork for further adventures. The character development is excellent. Everyone has their individual quirks, which are utilized perfectly; not feeling forced or overused, but just part of the characters' personalities. Little nuggets of information are laid out throughout the story that all fit together in the end, making the finale particularly strong.

Whether you are interested in "super power" stories or not, let me assure you, this is well worth your time. Highly recommended.
