To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
5.0
To Shape a Dragon's Breath was lovely! The writing here was so smooth and easy to follow and I loved how Moniquill Blackgoose structured the novel in short chapter formats and with informative titles. It made for such an engaging reading as she introduced and established all of the characters and the world-building and developed the plot.
And what a world-building! The take on dragons here and how that was tied to and explored through two different cultures and traditions was so interesting and well done, especially as it didn't shy away at all from the subject of colonialism. I also loved the stories sprinkled throughout and how they helped me understand this world and how people lived in it.
Anequs as a main character and narrator was also fantastic! I loved her perspective and view of the world and how she refused to back down or make herself small/something she wasn't just to spare people's (colonizers') sensibilities. Her journey here wasn't an easy one, but experiencing it along with her was a pleasure.
The small sprinkle of romance did lose me a little, but I still very much enjoyed how Anequs interacted with all side characters. Those were also just as well developed and complex as her and each had their own obstacles to overcome.
I also loved that there wasn't any huge twist or shocking revelation or anything throughout. The tone and pace remained steady the entire time and the ending was a very hopeful one. I'm so excited to see what's to come for this series!
